Comparative Summary for Second Grade

The program review for second grade reveals three broad clusters of programs. The first is comprised of the one program that comes close to supporting the level of achievement sought by this review. This program, combined with a talented teacher, would provide good prospects for student learning:

The second cluster contains a large variety of programs that could all be moderately effective. However, none of the programs in this cluster would support student achievement to the level sought in this review. Furthermore, there are substantial differences among these programs in their presentation styles and their coverage of various content areas. However, a choice of any of these programs would require supplementation to reach the objectives sought for second grade.

The third cluster contains the two programs that fell far short of the criteria in this review. As a result, neither of these programs is recommended.

Content Area Evaluations

The figure below summarizes the content area ratings for the second grade programs. Considerable variability of coverage across the topic areas can be noted in the figure. The pattern of strengths and weaknesses differs for each program. The implication is that high levels of achievement would require supplementation in areas that differ by program. Consequently, a careful evaluation of a second grade program seems indicated in order to determine the areas to emphasize and supplement in support of student learning.

Program Quality Evaluations

The program quality ratings for the second grade programs are summarized in the figure below. The overall evaluation generally follows the mathematical depth rating with one exception. The Saxon program is lower in this area but notably higher in the quality of presentation. The quality of student work ratings, on the other hand, closely parallel the overall ratings.
